Windows 11 File Explorer: `~` address bar and clearer search results in KB5127936
Optional preview KB5127936 (October 28, 2026) adds File Explorer address-bar support for `~` (e.g. `~\AppData`) and a more consistent search-results layout for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2 — gradual rollout.
Windows 11 File Explorer gains two gradual-rollout [File Explorer] improvements in optional preview KB5127936 (October 28, 2026; OS builds 26300.9818 and 26200.9818) for versions 25H2 and 26H2: a more consistent search results layout, and address-bar support for `~` to jump to your user profile folder and subfolders.
This News brief covers only those two Microsoft-documented items. It is not a rehash of Folder Options dark mode (already discussed in a TricknFix community topic), not the customizable context-menu article, and not a Cloud rebuild guide. No hands-on File Explorer lab test is claimed. Facts follow the Microsoft Support page for KB5127936 as consulted on 6 November 2026 (Europe/Paris).
What KB5127936 adds under File Explorer
Under gradual rollout [File Explorer], Microsoft documents:
- Search results layout — Key file information such as name, location, and date now appear in a consistent layout on the File Explorer search results page, making results easier to scan.
- Address bar `~` — The address bar now supports `~`, making it quicker to navigate directly to your user profile folder and subfolders (for example, `~\AppData`).
Do not treat `~` here as a claim that File Explorer suddenly behaves like a full Unix home shortcut everywhere beyond that KB wording and example. No registry tips, ClickLock claims, or invented address-bar syntax are added in this brief.
Same KB, different File Explorer angles (not this article)
The same preview also documents other File Explorer-related items that are out of scope as the main angle here:
- Folder Options dark mode — already covered as a TricknFix community discussion (Options de dossier / Folder Options dark mode); distinct from search layout and `~`.
- Customizable context menu — already covered in a separate News article (customizable context menu).
- Cloud rebuild — same KB, separate recovery feature (Cloud rebuild).
Who gets it, and how optional it is
KB5127936 is a non-security preview for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2. Availability of these File Explorer items follows a gradual rollout: features reach devices over time, so presence varies by device even after the package is installed.
Microsoft also notes that starting with the October 2026 release, Windows 11 version 24H2 no longer receives non-security preview updates. Non-security preview updates are available only for 25H2 and 26H2; 24H2 Enterprise and Education continue to receive monthly security updates but not this class of preview package.
Typical consumer path documented on the KB page: Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, then install the available optional update if offered. On a managed PC, ask IT before installing an optional preview. Prerequisite and servicing details remain on the KB; this article does not invent extra Settings paths for enabling `~` beyond what Microsoft states for the address bar.
What this article does not cover
Do not treat this page as a full KB5127936 changelog. DPAPI prompt-based protect/unprotect warnings, Phone Link Start hover, Magnifier, Narrator, BitLocker, Memory Integrity, Smart App Control, and other items in the same preview are out of scope here (some already have separate TricknFix coverage).
No invented success rates, FPS claims, or UI screenshots are claimed. Attribute only what KB5127936 states for these two File Explorer New! items.
