Unicode 17.0 in KB5127936: Windows text shaping support

Tutorial

Microsoft’s KB5127936 (October 28, 2026 preview; builds 26300.9818 / 26200.9818 for Windows 11 26H2 / 25H2) lists a gradual-rollout [Unicode] item: Windows text shaping support for Unicode 17.0, helping Windows correctly display and shape newly encoded characters and scripts.

Per the KB, Unicode 17.0 added 4,803 characters, including support for four newly encoded scripts: Beria Erfe, Sidetic, Tai Yo, and Tolong Siki. These updates help keep Windows text support current as the Unicode Standard evolves and improve support for languages and writing systems used worldwide.

For Standard context only (not as proof of the Windows update): the Unicode® 17.0.0 page on unicode.org, dated 2025 September 9 (announcement), confirms 4803 added characters and the same four new scripts (Sidetic, Tolong Siki, Beria Erfe, Tai Yo). Attribute Windows shaping / support claims only to KB5127936.

The same KB notes that Windows 11 24H2 no longer receives non-security preview updates starting with the October 2026 release — so this preview track is about 25H2 / 26H2. Optional path: Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Gradual rollout means the change does not arrive on every device at once even after the package is installed. On a managed PC, ask IT before installing an optional preview.

No hands-on font lab, no invented shaping engines, no invented font packs: brief topic + discussion question. This is not a second Phone Link Start-hover article, nor File Explorer ~ (lot27), nor DPAPI (topic 438).

Question: after KB5127936 (or an equivalent preview), have you already noticed better display / shaping of Unicode 17.0 characters (new scripts or recent characters) in Windows apps — and in which apps?
