Lag and high ping online in EA SPORTS FC 27 on PC: causes and solutions

Tutorial

This guide covers EA SPORTS FC 27 on PC (often searched for as "FIFA 27") when online matches suffer from lag, delayed controls, visual stuttering or disconnections, or when connection icons appear during the match. EA explains that every in-match action travels from your network to an EA game data center and back: any delay along that path is felt in game. The diagnosis consists of finding out which measurement is the problem (ping, packet loss or jitter) and where: at EA, at your internet service provider, or on your own network.

If the game also stutters offline, the problem is not the connection: see Stuttering or slow-motion gameplay on EA SPORTS FC 27 PC: causes and solutions instead.

Problem

  • Delay between pressing a key and the action on screen, online only (Division Rivals, Clubs, Online Friendlies, etc.).
  • Orange or red high ping, packet loss or jitter icons during the match.
  • Message "Connecting to Ultimate Team™ is not possible at the moment".
  • Matches rated Okay or Poor in the match history.

Step 1: rule out an EA server outage

When to use it: always first, and especially with the "Connecting to Ultimate Team™ is not possible at the moment" message, which EA links to a possible server issue.

Suggested solution

  1. Check the EA Server Status page for EA SPORTS FC.
  2. EA also says it posts outage announcements on its @EASFCDirect account.

Expected result: if an outage is reported, no setting on your side will fix it: wait until service is restored. Otherwise, go to step 2.

Step 2: identify the measurement at fault

When to use it: if the servers are working. Connection monitoring is on by default in FC 27, but its display may have been changed.

Suggested solution

  1. In the game, go to Customise, Settings, Game Settings, Visual, then, at the bottom of the list, Connection Monitoring.
  2. Choose Ping and connection indicators: ping is shown in milliseconds, updated every second, with icons when certain thresholds are reached.
  3. Play an online match and note which icon appears:
  • High ping: round-trip time to the data center; it shows up as a delay between the key press and the action.
  • Packet loss: data that does not arrive and has to be resent; it causes delays, stuttering or disconnections.
  • Jitter: a sudden, large variation in ping; it makes gameplay uneven and can disconnect you if it is severe.
  1. An orange icon signals a possible drop in quality; a red icon, a more significant drop. If the icons stay on screen for the whole match, EA considers the connection likely unstable.
  2. For a measurement outside matches, use the EA Connection Report, which scores your connection based on ping, packet loss and jitter.

Expected result: you know whether the problem is occasional (step 3), inconsistent (step 4) or persistent (step 5).

Step 3: connection usually good but dropped

When to use it: if your matches are usually rated good or excellent, and icons or Okay / Poor ratings suddenly appear.

Suggested solution

  1. Close and restart the game. EA says you may have been connected to a different data center from your usual one.
  2. Restart your router. If the modem and router are separate, restart both and wait at least 30 seconds before turning them back on.
  3. Stop other network use during the match: large downloads, HD or 4K video, many connected devices.

Expected result: the icons disappear and matches get their usual rating again.

Step 4: inconsistent connection (jitter, packet loss)

When to use it: if quality varies from one match to the next or during a single match, especially on Wi-Fi.

Suggested solution

  1. Switch to Ethernet. EA explains that Wi-Fi is more prone to interference and that a cable generally provides a more stable connection.
  2. If a cable is not possible, prefer the 5 GHz band, which is faster and more stable but has a shorter range: move the PC closer to the router. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further but more often leads to high ping, packet loss and jitter. If the 5 GHz network does not appear on the PC, see Réseau Wi-Fi 5 GHz invisible sur le PC : causes et solutions (French guide).
  3. Change the Wi-Fi channel in the router interface if many networks surround you. On 2.4 GHz, EA recommends the non-overlapping channels 1, 6 and 11. Several tries may be needed.

Expected result: jitter and packet loss icons become rare. If Wi-Fi stays slow outside the game, see Wi-Fi lent sur le PC alors que la connexion est bonne (French guide).

Rollback: write down the original channel before changing it so you can go back to it.

Step 5: connection often Okay or Poor

When to use it: if steps 3 and 4 were not enough. EA presents these as advanced network changes: follow your router's manual.

Suggested solution

  1. Disconnect your VPN, if you use one, then test a match.
  2. Enable QoS (Quality of Service) if your router offers it, to prioritise EA SPORTS FC 27 traffic. This helps when the network is shared.
  3. Check the router firmware, strictly following the manufacturer's instructions. EA warns that this can be very technical: never cut the power during an update.

Expected result: matches are no longer rated Okay or Poor.

Special cases

  • Distant data center: EA explains that your internet provider does not always route data along the most direct path. The closest data center is therefore not necessarily the one that serves you best. In Europe, EA lists Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Madrid and Milan among others. If ping stays high despite a healthy local network, compare with the EA Connection Report and, if needed, contact your internet provider.
  • The Grounds: you cannot choose your server, lock your region or set a maximum ping. Playing with friends from another region can raise some players' ping: EA advises playing separately to compare.

Final check

  • ☐ No outage is reported on the EA server status page.
  • ☐ Connection monitoring shows ping and indicators during matches.
  • ☐ The PC is connected by Ethernet, or by 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the router.
  • ☐ No VPN or large download is active during the match.
  • ☐ A full online match plays without a persistent red icon.
