Rob Nelson reportedly told Davy Jones (Flow Games, late Aug 2026) that console builds run at 30 FPS "during this development period" and that a 60 FPS option at launch or later needs the tech team's input. Reported by Kotaku and VGC. No official Rockstar frame-rate spec as of Nov 5, 2026.

Short version: Rockstar has not published an official frame-rate spec for Grand Theft Auto VI. What exists is an interview remark: Rob Nelson, described by Flow Games as lead developer and co-director at Rockstar North, reportedly told Brazilian creator Davy Jones (Flow Games) in late August 2026 that, during this development period, the console builds run at 30 frames per second, and that he could not say whether a 60 FPS option would come at launch or later without consulting the technical team. With the game due on November 19, 2026, here is what is known, what is not, and where it comes from.

What Rob Nelson reportedly said

The remarks were first reported in Portuguese by Flow Games after Davy Jones visited Rockstar North around the "GTA VI: An Extended Look" reveal. English-language outlets quoted a machine translation of that report. In substance:

  • 30 FPS for now: "during this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second."
  • 60 FPS undecided: the technical team still needs to be consulted to determine whether there will be a 60 FPS option at launch "or in the future".
  • No other specs: Nelson said he did not have details on resolution or other technical features such as ray tracing.

Kotaku covered the remarks on August 27, 2026, and VGC followed on August 28, 2026. Both relayed the same translated excerpt.

What this is not: an official Rockstar spec sheet

Some headlines turned this into "confirmed 30 FPS at launch". The underlying quote is more cautious. It describes current console builds and leaves 60 FPS open. As of November 5, 2026, we found no Rockstar Newswire post or official game page listing GTA VI frame rates, graphics modes, resolution targets or PS5 Pro enhancements. Treat 30 FPS as the most credible expectation, not a published product spec.

What the footage suggests (analysis, not confirmation)

Digital Foundry examined the Extended Look footage, which was mastered as a 30 FPS video. Its analysis found an unusually tight lock to 30 FPS with only rare dropped frames, a rendering resolution around native 1440p, and visible ray-traced reflections and global illumination. Its reading is that GTA VI looks like a "30fps-first" design, and that a 60 FPS console mode would need major cutbacks on both GPU and CPU. That is expert analysis of a video, not a Rockstar statement.

Unknowns: 60 FPS, 40 FPS and PS5 Pro

  • 60 FPS mode: not announced. Nelson's reported wording leaves it open, including after launch.
  • 40 FPS / 120 Hz mode: not announced. This is a frequent player request, but nothing official.
  • PS5 Pro enhancements: not detailed by Rockstar.
  • Xbox Series S: no technical details published.
  • PC: not announced by Rockstar, so there is no official PC frame-rate information.

Context: Rockstar's 30 FPS history on consoles

A 30 FPS console target would match Rockstar's recent open-world launches. GTA V only got a 60 FPS option on consoles with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release in 2022, and Red Dead Redemption 2 still runs at 30 FPS on consoles. On PC, frame rates are not capped this way, but GTA VI on PC remains unannounced.

What to watch before November 19

  • A Rockstar Newswire post or support page listing graphics/performance modes.
  • Platform store pages (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store) mentioning PS5 Pro or performance options.
  • Launch-day technical analyses of the retail build.

We will update this article if Rockstar publishes official performance details.
