Rockstar Games Online Services unavailable in GTA Online on PC: solutions

Tutorial

This guide covers GTA Online on PC when the game refuses access to online mode with the message "Rockstar Games Online Services are unavailable right now" (shown as an equivalent message in other game languages). According to Rockstar, this error comes either from an outage on Rockstar's servers or from a network connection problem: the diagnosis is therefore about finding out which side is blocking before changing anything. The Rockstar articles cited here cover GTA Online on PC without distinguishing GTA V Enhanced from GTA V Legacy; the steps below do not depend on the edition.

Problem

When launching GTA Online, or when trying to join online mode from Story Mode, one of these messages appears (English wording quoted by Rockstar):

Plain text4 lines

Rockstar Games Online Services are unavailable right now. Please return to Grand Theft Auto V.
Rockstar Games Online Services are unavailable right now. Please try again later.

Rockstar also lists "Rockstar Games Services are unavailable" among GTA Online connection errors on PC, together with "Saving failed", "Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error" and "Timed out locating session".

Before you start

  • Write down the exact message and when it appears (at launch, when joining a session, while saving).
  • Check whether Story Mode works: the first message actually asks you to return to Grand Theft Auto V, which indicates that only the online service is affected.
  • If the error mentions BattlEye, it is a different problem: see the guide BattlEye error when launching GTA Online on PC: causes and solutions instead.

Step 1: check the status of Rockstar services

When to use it: always first. It is the only step that requires no change.

Suggested solution

  1. Open the official Rockstar Games Service Status page.
  2. Look at the Grand Theft Auto Online – PC line, as well as the Authentication and Rockstar Games Launcher services in the Online Services section.
  3. If a service is down or under maintenance, wait until it is restored: no PC setting can get around a server outage.

Expected result: if everything is shown as operational and the error persists, the cause is probably on your connection's side; go to step 2.

Step 2: test the connection and another network

When to use it: Rockstar services are operational, but the error continues.

Suggested solution

  1. Check that the Internet connection works normally on the PC (browsing, other online games).
  2. If you are on Wi-Fi, try a wired connection, as Rockstar advises.
  3. Rockstar gives these speed targets for GTA Online: 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload recommended (0.5 Mbps minimum). Measure them with an online speed test.
  4. Decisive test: temporarily connect the PC to another network, for example a phone's mobile hotspot, then relaunch GTA Online.

Expected result:

  • GTA Online works on the other network: according to Rockstar, the problem probably comes from your router or your Internet service provider. Continue with steps 3 and 4.
  • The error also persists on the other network: the home network is unlikely; go to step 5, then to the special cases.

Step 3: restart the router

When to use it: the game works on another network, or the home connection seems unstable.

Suggested solution

  1. Close GTA V and the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Unplug the router from the power and leave it unplugged for about 10 minutes, the duration given by Rockstar.
  3. Plug it back in, wait until Internet access is restored, then relaunch the game.

Expected result: access to GTA Online works. Otherwise, go to step 4.

This is a simple power-cycle restart, not a factory reset of the router.

Step 4: check NAT and GTA Online ports

When to use it: the game works on another network but not at home, even after restarting the router. This step requires access to the router's administration interface.

Suggested solution

  1. Rockstar states that GTA Online requires these UDP ports to be open:
PortProtocol
6672UDP
61455UDP
61456UDP
61457UDP
61458UDP
  1. Open your router's interface and check whether these ports are blocked by its firewall. The exact method (port forwarding, UPnP, firewall settings) depends on the model: follow the documentation from your Internet service provider or the manufacturer.
  2. Rockstar also points out that the NAT type can be changed inadvertently by opening or forwarding other ports. If you have already created rules for other games, review them.
  3. Write down every rule you add or change: to roll back, simply delete it or restore the value you noted.

Expected result: after saving the settings and relaunching the game, online access works. Do not open other ports "just in case": only those listed by Rockstar are relevant.

Step 5: try other DNS servers (optional)

When to use it: only if the previous steps did not help. Rockstar suggests this change, which requires administrator rights and changes how Windows resolves addresses for the whole network adapter, not just for the game.

Suggested solution

  1. Precaution: on the screen in point 4, write down the DNS settings shown before changing them (usually "Obtain DNS server address automatically"), for IPv4 as well as IPv6.
  2. Open Settings, then Network & internet, and display the network adapters: Advanced network settings then More network adapter options on Windows 11, or Change adapter options on Windows 10.
  3. Right-click the connection in use, then Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then Properties, and choose Use the following DNS server addresses. Rockstar gives Google's public DNS servers as an example:
Plain text4 lines

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
  1. Do the same for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) with the addresses given by Rockstar:
Plain text4 lines

2001:4860:4860::8888
2001:4860:4860::8844
  1. Confirm with OK, then relaunch the game.

Expected result: online access works. If nothing changes, go back to the settings noted in point 1: a DNS change that has no effect does not need to be kept.

Special cases

  • The message appears for all players at the same time: it is most likely an outage or maintenance. Watch the service status page rather than changing your network.
  • Other connection messages ("Timed out locating session", "Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error"): Rockstar covers them in the same PC connection troubleshooting article; steps 1 to 5 apply as well.
  • Company, school or public network: you usually cannot change its firewall. The test with another network (step 2) remains the simplest way to confirm this cause.

Final check

  • ☐ The status page shows GTA Online PC and the authentication services as operational.
  • ☐ The behaviour on another network is known (works or not).
  • ☐ Any port rules added match only Rockstar's list.
  • ☐ If the DNS settings were changed without effect, the original settings have been restored.
