You launch GTA Online on PC at the same time as a friend, but you can't join their session, their invites never show up, or you simply can't find them. On PC, this is usually caused by an edition mismatch (Legacy or Enhanced), a visibility setting or, with the Xbox app, a Microsoft privacy setting. This guide checks these points in order.
What to know first
- On PC, GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced are two separate editions. Rockstar states that the original version of GTA Online on PC is a separate instance: players who remain on it can't play in sessions with those on the upgraded (Enhanced) version. To play together, you need to launch the same version.
- According to Rockstar Support, cross-network play applies to PC platforms with each other (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, the Xbox app on PC, etc.).
- There is no cross-play between PC and consoles: Rockstar states that players on PC cannot play with players on console.
- No step in this guide asks you to touch your antivirus, firewall or BattlEye.
Step 1: check that you play the same edition
When to use it: always first, especially if one of you recently installed or upgraded the game.
Step 2: set your presence visibility
When to use it: you're on the same edition, but your friend can't see you online or can't invite you.
Step 3: join through a shared crew
When to use it: invites still don't work even though you're on the same edition and both of you set visibility to Everyone. Rockstar notes that you must be in the same crew to use this method.
Step 4: allow cross-network play if one of you uses the Xbox app
When to use it: one player launches GTA V from the Xbox app on PC (for example through PC Game Pass) and the other from another store.
Special cases
- Your friend plays on console: this isn't possible from a PC. If you're both on console, PS4/Xbox One to PS5/Xbox Series migration is explained here: Migrating your GTA Online profile from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series: steps and limits.
- A message says Rockstar online services are unavailable: the problem isn't related to your friend, follow Rockstar Games Online Services unavailable in GTA Online on PC: solutions.
- The game won't start because of BattlEye: see BattlEye error when launching GTA Online on PC: causes and solutions.
Final check
- ☐ You both launch the same edition (Legacy or Enhanced).
- ☐ Your presence visibility lets your friends see you.
- ☐ Cross-network play is allowed if one of you plays through the Xbox app.
- ☐ You can join your friend's session (invite or crew).
