GTA V Story Mode save missing on PS5 or Xbox Series: how to transfer it

Tutorial

Moving from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, and GTA V starts Story Mode from the very beginning? That is expected: Story Mode progress does not carry over on its own from one console generation to the next. Rockstar and PlayStation describe a one-time migration: you upload the save from the old version of the game, then download it on the new one.

Problem

  • On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, GTA V Story Mode starts from scratch.
  • Progress (missions, characters' money, properties) from PS4 or Xbox One does not appear.
  • The GTA Online character was migrated, but not the single-player game.

What to know first

  • Two separate processes: migrating the GTA Online profile and uploading the Story Mode save are not done in the same place. The GTA Online profile is covered in the guide Migrating your GTA Online profile from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series.
  • One-time migration: according to PlayStation, transferring progress to the new generation is a one-time migration.
  • Only one save stored at a time per platform. It remains available to download for 90 days.
  • Allowed directions: Rockstar states that PS4 or Xbox One players can migrate their Story Mode and Online progress to either PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. However, profiles cannot be migrated between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or from a console to PC.
  • Rockstar account: the upload goes to Rockstar's online services (Social Club). Use the same Rockstar Games account on the old and new console.
  • On PC, the process is different (GTA V Legacy to GTA V Enhanced): see GTA V Legacy save missing from GTA V Enhanced on PC.

Step 1: check the linked Rockstar account

When to use it: before any upload, especially if you have several Rockstar accounts or several console profiles.

Suggested solution

  1. Sign in to your Rockstar Games account, linked accounts section.
  2. Check that the PlayStation Network or Xbox account used on the old console is listed.
  3. Check that the account used on the new console is linked to the same Rockstar account.
  4. Note the email address of the Rockstar account concerned, so you don't sign in to another account by mistake.

Expected result: the source and destination console accounts are linked to the same Rockstar Games account.

When to stop: if a console account is linked to another Rockstar account, don't unlink it lightly. Contact Rockstar support first, as a wrong unlink can complicate the GTA Online profile migration.

Step 2: upload the save from the old console

When to use it: the accounts are correctly linked and you still have access to the old console with the PS4 or Xbox One version of the game.

Suggested solution

  1. On the old console, launch GTA V with the account that holds the right progress.
  2. Open the Pause menu, then the Game tab.
  3. Choose Upload Save Game, then select your most advanced save.
  4. Wait for the upload confirmation before quitting the game.

What it does: the selected save is stored online by Rockstar, attached to your account. The 90-day window to download it starts.

Expected result: the game confirms the upload.

Warning: only one save is stored per platform. If you upload another one later, don't expect to get the first one back: pick the right save from the start.

Step 3: download the save on PS5 or Xbox Series

When to use it: the upload is confirmed, less than 90 days ago.

Suggested solution

  1. On the new console, launch GTA V (Story Mode) with the console account linked to the same Rockstar account.
  2. Accept the download of the uploaded save when the game offers it.
  3. Load the recovered game and check your progress.

Expected result: Story Mode resumes where you left off on the old console.

Note: the official sources consulted don't detail the exact recovery screen, and labels can vary with the game language and updates. If no download offer appears, don't upload again at random: contact Rockstar support and give the upload date.

Special cases

  • More than 90 days have passed: the uploaded save is no longer available to download. If you still have the old console and the original save, upload it again.
  • No upload option on the old console: the upload goes through Rockstar's online services. Check your connection and the Rockstar service status, then try again later.
  • From PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, or from Xbox One to PS5: Rockstar states that migration from PS4 or Xbox One is possible to either new-generation console. Link the accounts concerned to the same Rockstar account before uploading the save.
  • Between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or from console to PC: Rockstar states that profiles cannot be migrated in these cases.
  • Sanctioned account: a suspended or banned account may face restrictions. See GTA Online suspension or ban.

Final check

  • ☐ Both console accounts are linked to the same Rockstar Games account.
  • ☐ The save was uploaded from the old console (confirmation received).
  • ☐ The save was downloaded on the new console, less than 90 days after the upload.
  • ☐ Story Mode progress matches the old console.
