GTA Online not accessible through the Xbox app on PC: privacy settings

English translation of the original French post. Code, commands, paths and error codes keep their original meaning. Replies and moderation are shared in the original discussion.

You launch GTA V from the Xbox app on PC (for example with PC Game Pass), Story Mode works, but GTA Online won't start, or you get in but can't use voice chat, Crews or Jobs. Rockstar links these symptoms to the privacy and online safety settings of the Microsoft account used in the Xbox app. This guide shows which settings to check.

Problem

  • GTA V is installed through the Xbox app on PC and GTA Online won't open.
  • Or: you're in GTA Online but voice chat, Crews or Jobs remain unavailable.
  • The same game works for other Steam, Epic or Rockstar Games Launcher players.

What to know first

  • These settings belong to your Microsoft / Xbox account, not to the game: you change them in the Xbox app or on account.xbox.com.
  • The setting names below are the English labels quoted by Rockstar Support. In other interface languages they are translated; find them by meaning (join multiplayer games, cross-network play, communication, community creations).
  • If the message says Rockstar online services are unavailable for everyone, this guide doesn't apply (see special cases).

Step 1: allow multiplayer games

When to use it: GTA Online doesn't start at all from the Xbox app.

Suggested solution

  1. Open the Xbox app on PC, click your profile, then Settings and Account.
  2. Under Privacy Settings, click MANAGE, then open Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety. You can also go through your Xbox account settings.
  3. Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow, then submit.
  4. Fully close GTA V and launch GTA Online again.

Expected result: GTA Online loads from the Xbox app.

Step 2: allow cross-network play

When to use it: GTA Online still doesn't start, or you can't find players from the other PC stores.

Suggested solution

  1. In the same Xbox privacy settings, under communication and multiplayer, set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
  2. Submit the change.
  3. Microsoft details how this setting works: How do multiplayer games and communication work for cross-network play?
  4. Launch GTA Online again.

Expected result: you can access GTA Online and join sessions of other PC players on the same edition.

Step 3: unlock voice chat, Crews and Jobs

When to use it: you're in GTA Online but voice chat, Crews or Jobs don't work.

Suggested solution

  1. For voice chat with players outside the Xbox network: set You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text to Allow.
  2. For community-created Jobs: set You can see and upload community creations to Everyone.
  3. Check that cross-network play is still allowed (step 2).
  4. Submit, close GTA V and launch GTA Online again.

Expected result: voice chat, Crews and Jobs become available.

Special cases

Final check

  • ☐ Multiplayer games are allowed on the Microsoft account used in the Xbox app.
  • ☐ Cross-network play is allowed.
  • ☐ Communication outside Xbox and community creations are allowed if you use voice chat or Jobs.
  • ☐ GTA Online starts and online features respond.
