You launch GTA V from the Xbox app on PC (for example with PC Game Pass), Story Mode works, but GTA Online won't start, or you get in but can't use voice chat, Crews or Jobs. Rockstar links these symptoms to the privacy and online safety settings of the Microsoft account used in the Xbox app. This guide shows which settings to check.
What to know first
- These settings belong to your Microsoft / Xbox account, not to the game: you change them in the Xbox app or on account.xbox.com.
- The setting names below are the English labels quoted by Rockstar Support. In other interface languages they are translated; find them by meaning (join multiplayer games, cross-network play, communication, community creations).
- If the message says Rockstar online services are unavailable for everyone, this guide doesn't apply (see special cases).
Step 1: allow multiplayer games
When to use it: GTA Online doesn't start at all from the Xbox app.
Step 2: allow cross-network play
When to use it: GTA Online still doesn't start, or you can't find players from the other PC stores.
Step 3: unlock voice chat, Crews and Jobs
When to use it: you're in GTA Online but voice chat, Crews or Jobs don't work.
Special cases
- You want to play with a friend on another PC store: also check that you both launch the same edition (Legacy or Enhanced). See GTA V Enhanced or Legacy on PC: choosing the version for your hardware.
- GTA Online character missing on Enhanced: you need to migrate your profile, see GTA Online character missing from GTA V Enhanced on PC: migrate your profile.
- "Rockstar online services unavailable" message: follow Rockstar Games Online Services unavailable in GTA Online on PC: solutions.
- Rolling back: you can set each setting back to its previous value at any time from the same Xbox settings.
Final check
- ☐ Multiplayer games are allowed on the Microsoft account used in the Xbox app.
- ☐ Cross-network play is allowed.
- ☐ Communication outside Xbox and community creations are allowed if you use voice chat or Jobs.
- ☐ GTA Online starts and online features respond.
