An alert message appears when you launch GTA Online: your online access is suspended until a given date, or banned with no end date. This guide explains what Rockstar Games' policy says for each case, what happens to your character and your GTA$, and how to appeal if you believe the penalty is unjustified. It follows Rockstar Games' official suspension and ban policy, checked on October 27, 2026 (listed at the end of the topic).
What to know before acting
According to Rockstar Games' policy:
- A suspension or ban is applied for a violation of the Rockstar Games Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.
- Suspension: it takes effect immediately. The expiration date is shown on the Alert screen and on any further access attempt. Characters, progress, property and inventory may be reset. Online access returns once the suspension expires.
- Further violations after a suspension may lead to a permanent ban.
- Ban: it is immediate and has no expiration date. Characters, progress, property and inventory, virtual currency included, become inaccessible and may be reset.
- You can appeal through Rockstar's official form. Rockstar states that baseless appeals may be closed or may lead to further action.
No third-party website, tool or seller can lift a penalty: only Rockstar Games Support handles appeals. Never give your login details to a service promising an "unban".
Step 1: identify the type of penalty
When to use it: always first.
Step 2: for a suspension, wait for the expiration date
When to use it: the alert screen shows an expiration date and you don't dispute the penalty.
Step 3: appeal if the penalty seems unjustified
When to use it: you genuinely believe you didn't break the rules (suspension or ban).
Step 4: handle your GTA+ membership if you're banned
When to use it: you subscribe to GTA+ and your account is banned or suspended.

Special cases
- BattlEye message at launch on PC: it's an anti-cheat problem to fix, not necessarily a penalty. See BattlEye error when launching GTA Online on PC: causes and solutions.
- Online services unavailable: a Rockstar server outage is not a penalty. See Rockstar Games Online Services unavailable in GTA Online on PC: solutions.
- Profile migration: Rockstar states that a suspended or banned profile is not eligible for GTA Online profile migration.
Final check
- ☐ You identified the penalty: suspension (with a date) or ban (no date).
- ☐ You reread the Community Guidelines and the Terms of Service.
- ☐ If you appealed, the request was sent once, from the penalized account, through the official form.
- ☐ Any GTA+ membership was cancelled if you can no longer use it.
