GTA VI pre-load not working on PS5 or Xbox Series: causes and solutions

English translation of the original French post. Code, commands, paths and error codes keep their original meaning. Replies and moderation are shared in the original discussion.

You pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI and want it installed before the November 19, 2026 release, but the download doesn't start or the pre-order doesn't show on the console. This guide only uses official information from Rockstar Games, Take-Two, Sony and Microsoft, checked on October 27, 2026 and listed at the end of the topic.

Problem

  • The GTA VI pre-load doesn't start on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • The pre-ordered game doesn't appear in the console's library.
  • The console was in rest mode and nothing downloaded.
  • The Xbox pre-order disappeared before release.

  • Before November 12, 2026, no pre-load is expected: this is not a fault.
  • Use the console and account that placed the pre-order.

Step 1: check that the pre-order is active

When to use it: the game isn't in the library or no download starts after November 12, 2026.

Suggested solution

  1. PS5: according to Sony, a paid pre-order appears in your Game Library, on PlayStation Store and in the PlayStation App. Check that you're signed in with the right PlayStation Network account.
  2. Xbox: open your Microsoft order history with the console's Microsoft account and check the pre-order status.
  3. Boxed version: first redeem the code from the box on the right account. Details are in GTA VI boxed copy with no disc: code, editions and pre-order bonuses explained.

What to look for: a pre-order missing from the history or marked as cancelled.

Expected result: the pre-order is visible and active on the account the console uses.

Step 2: set up auto-download on PS5

When to use it: the pre-order is active on PS5 but nothing downloads.

Suggested solution

  1. From your games home, open Game Library and select GTA VI.
  2. Select the timer counting down to release. The list of included content appears: a selected checkbox means auto-download is on for that content.
  3. Adjust the selection so the game is checked, then select OK.
  4. Also check the console's automatic downloads: Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, option Auto-Download.

What to look for: Sony states that a pre-order starts downloading as soon as the content is available when automatic downloads are set up.

Expected result: the download shows in the downloads list once the pre-load opens.

Rollback: clear the content in the same list to stop auto-download.

Step 3: let the PS5 download in rest mode

When to use it: the PS5 is usually in rest mode and the download doesn't progress.

Suggested solution

  1. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  2. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  3. Put the console in rest mode rather than turning it off completely.

What to look for: without this option, Sony states downloads don't happen in rest mode.

Expected result: the pre-load progresses while the console is in rest mode.

Rollback: turn off Stay Connected to the Internet in the same menu.

Step 4: check the payment method on Xbox

When to use it: the pre-order was placed on Microsoft Store and is no longer visible, or you see a payment issue.

Suggested solution

  1. According to Microsoft, with a payment method other than your Microsoft account balance, the charge can happen up to 10 days before release.
  2. If the payment can't be authorized (for example an expired card), Microsoft automatically cancels the pre-order.
  3. In your Microsoft account, update the payment method, then check your order history again.
  4. If the pre-order was cancelled, place it again from Microsoft Store.

Expected result: the pre-order is active and paid again.

Step 5: install the game if it doesn't appear at release (Xbox)

When to use it: GTA VI is out, the order went through, but the game doesn't appear in My games & apps.

Suggested solution

  1. Open the game's page in Microsoft Store.
  2. If the Buy button now reads Install, select it.
  3. If the game is still missing while order history shows the order went through, contact Microsoft Store support.

Expected result: installation starts from the game page.

Special cases

  • Refund after pre-loading on PS5: the PlayStation Store cancellation policy excludes refunds once the download, streaming or pre-load has started, unless the content is faulty. If you're still unsure about keeping the game, don't start the pre-load.
  • Pre-install procedure on Xbox: the Microsoft pages checked don't describe the pre-load screen. Check the pre-order and payment first (steps 1 and 4).
  • Rockstar Games Store pre-order: make sure the code you received was redeemed on the console's PlayStation or Xbox account.
  • PS4 or PS5 Pro: see GTA VI multiplayer, PS4 or PS5 Pro: what the official pages say.
  • PC version: no PC version has been announced so far, so there's no PC pre-load. See GTA VI on PC: what Rockstar has officially announced.

Final check

  • ☐ Today is November 12, 2026 or later.
  • ☐ The pre-order is active on the account the console uses.
  • ☐ On PS5, auto-download is on for GTA VI and Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled.
  • ☐ On Xbox, the payment method is valid and the pre-order isn't cancelled.
