Can't join a friend in GTA Online on PC: edition and invites

English translation of the original French post. Code, commands, paths and error codes keep their original meaning. Replies and moderation are shared in the original discussion.

You launch GTA Online on PC at the same time as a friend, but you can't join their session, their invites never show up, or you simply can't find them. On PC, this is usually caused by an edition mismatch (Legacy or Enhanced), a visibility setting or, with the Xbox app, a Microsoft privacy setting. This guide checks these points in order.

Problem

  • You and your friend both play on PC, but you can't join their GTA Online session.
  • Their invites don't arrive, or the option to join their game doesn't appear.
  • You bought the game on different stores (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox app).

What to know first

  • On PC, GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced are two separate editions. Rockstar states that the original version of GTA Online on PC is a separate instance: players who remain on it can't play in sessions with those on the upgraded (Enhanced) version. To play together, you need to launch the same version.
  • According to Rockstar Support, cross-network play applies to PC platforms with each other (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, the Xbox app on PC, etc.).
  • There is no cross-play between PC and consoles: Rockstar states that players on PC cannot play with players on console.
  • No step in this guide asks you to touch your antivirus, firewall or BattlEye.

Step 1: check that you play the same edition

When to use it: always first, especially if one of you recently installed or upgraded the game.

Suggested solution

  1. Ask your friend which edition they launch: GTA V Legacy or GTA V Enhanced (the name appears in your Steam, Epic, Rockstar Games Launcher or Xbox library).
  2. If you're not on the same edition, agree on one and both launch it.
  3. If one of you moves to Enhanced for the first time, their GTA Online character doesn't follow automatically: they must migrate their profile (see GTA Online character missing from GTA V Enhanced on PC: migrate your profile).
  4. To choose between the two editions based on your hardware: GTA V Enhanced or Legacy on PC: choosing the version for your hardware.

Expected result: you both launch the same edition and can join each other.

Step 2: set your presence visibility

When to use it: you're on the same edition, but your friend can't see you online or can't invite you.

Suggested solution

  1. Launch GTA Online and open the Rockstar Games menu.
  2. Select the Settings gear, then Game Settings.
  3. Under Presence Visibility, select Everyone.
  4. Ask your friend to do the same on their side, then try sending or accepting the invite again.
  5. If the invite still doesn't work, try joining their session from the Pause Menu (step 3).

Expected result: each of you sees the other online and invites appear.

Step 3: join through a shared crew

When to use it: invites still don't work even though you're on the same edition and both of you set visibility to Everyone. Rockstar notes that you must be in the same crew to use this method.

Suggested solution

  1. Join the same Rockstar Games crew as your friend.
  2. In GTA Online, open the Pause Menu, go to the Online tab and select Join Crew Members.
  3. If that doesn't work: Pause Menu, Online tab, Crews tab, then My Crews and View Members; select your friend in the list of crew members and choose Join Game.

Expected result: you land in the same session as your friend through the crew.

Step 4: allow cross-network play if one of you uses the Xbox app

When to use it: one player launches GTA V from the Xbox app on PC (for example through PC Game Pass) and the other from another store.

Suggested solution

  1. In the Xbox app on PC, open your profile (profile icon), then Settings.
  2. Under Account, locate the privacy settings and select MANAGE: the Xbox privacy and online safety page opens (also reachable from your Xbox account settings).
  3. Set the two settings named by Rockstar to Allow: You can join multiplayer games and You can join cross-network play, then select Submit.
  4. Microsoft explains how cross-network play works here: How do multiplayer games and communication work for cross-network play?
  5. Restart GTA Online after the change.

Expected result: the Xbox app player can join or invite Steam, Epic or Rockstar Games Launcher players on the same edition.

Special cases

Final check

  • ☐ You both launch the same edition (Legacy or Enhanced).
  • ☐ Your presence visibility lets your friends see you.
  • ☐ Cross-network play is allowed if one of you plays through the Xbox app.
  • ☐ You can join your friend's session (invite or crew).
