On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, GTA Online may refuse to start, send you to a subscription page or leave the "online" option unusable, while GTA V Story Mode works. On consoles, the most common cause is a missing subscription that includes online multiplayer. This guide helps you check the subscription, then account restrictions, before looking for an outage.
What to know first
- PS5: the official GTA Online listing on the PlayStation Store states that PS Plus is required for online play. Online multiplayer is included in all PlayStation Plus tiers, Essential included.
- Xbox Series X|S: online console multiplayer is included in Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate, according to the official Xbox Game Pass page.
- The game and the subscription are two separate purchases. Owning GTA V or GTA Online does not replace the subscription, and the subscription does not necessarily include the game.
- On PC, no such subscription is required: this guide only covers consoles.
Step 1: check the active subscription
When to use it: always, first.
Expected result: the subscription shows as active and GTA Online connects.
Note: menu names may vary with the system software version. If in doubt, check the subscription from the official PlayStation or Xbox website or app.
Step 2: check the profile in use
When to use it: the subscription is active, but GTA Online still asks you to subscribe.
Expected result: the game recognises the subscription of the signed-in profile.
Step 3: check account restrictions
When to use it: child account or account managed by a family organiser.
Expected result: the account is allowed to play online.
Special cases
- Active subscription but a Rockstar error message: it may be an outage. Check Rockstar's service status, then the guide Rockstar Games Online Services unavailable. The network steps in that guide are for PC.
- Penalised account: a suspension message has nothing to do with the subscription. See GTA Online suspension or ban.
- Character from PS4 or Xbox One: see Migrating your GTA Online profile to PS5 or Xbox Series.
- Occasional free trials: Rockstar has previously offered GTA Online without a subscription for a limited time. These offers are temporary and do not change the general rule.
Final check
- ☐ PS Plus (PS5) or Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate (Xbox) is active.
- ☐ The signed-in profile is the one holding the subscription.
- ☐ No family restriction blocks online play.
- ☐ GTA Online launches from the game menu.
