This guide covers GTA Online on PC, in GTA V Enhanced as well as GTA V Legacy, when the BattlEye anti-cheat shows an error at launch or kicks you from a session. According to Rockstar Support, BattlEye must be running during online sessions: without BattlEye, the game cannot connect to the official GTA Online servers. Story Mode, on the other hand, can be played without BattlEye. The goal of this guide is therefore to get BattlEye working again, never to bypass it.
Before you start
- Write down the exact message and when it appears (at launch or mid-session): the rest of the diagnosis depends on it.
- Note your store (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games) and your version (Enhanced or Legacy).
- Steam Deck: Rockstar states that BattlEye is not supported there for GTA Online. Story Mode remains playable, but GTA Online does not. The steps below do not change this limitation.
- Community RP servers: their launchers disable BattlEye because those servers do not require it. Rockstar specifies that these servers' instructions for launching the game without BattlEye do not allow you to play on the official servers.
Step 1: check that BattlEye is enabled and launched normally
When to use it: always first, especially if you have played on RP servers or changed launch options.
Step 2: remove graphics mods
When to use it: if you have installed ReShade, Special_K or another tool that modifies the game's image.
Step 3: allow the BattlEye folder in your antivirus
When to use it: if an antivirus is installed, and in particular with the Driver Load Error (1072) error, which Rockstar attributes to something on the system preventing BattlEye from installing or starting.
Do not exclude an entire drive or the Program Files folder: limit the exclusion to the game's BattlEye folder. Do not turn off your antivirus to play.
Rockstar also reports that AVG and Trend Micro may prevent the game from starting even with the exclusion. In that case, contact the antivirus developer's support. Rockstar also mentions switching to another security solution, for example Microsoft Defender built into Windows. The PC should never be left unprotected.
Step 4: error 1072, reinstall the BattlEye service
When to use it: only if the Driver Load Error (1072) message persists after steps 1 to 3.
Step 5: verify or reinstall the game files
When to use it: if the error continues after the previous steps. Rockstar first suggests verifying the installed files, then reinstalling GTA V.
Special case: kicked from a session by BattlEye
For the message You were kicked from the session by BattlEye, Rockstar lists several possible causes: a conflict with other software, insufficient performance while loading into a session, network latency or an anti-cheat detection.
- Software conflict: go through steps 2 and 3 again, then close software that hooks into the game (overlays, capture or modding tools).
- Performance: compare your PC with the GTA V PC system requirements. The requirements are not the same for Enhanced and Legacy.
- Network: follow Rockstar's GTA Online PC connection troubleshooting.
- Detection: no setting should be used to hide cheating software. If you believe you were kicked by mistake, contact Rockstar Support.
Final check
- ☐ BattlEye is ticked in the Rockstar Games Launcher and no launch option is entered.
- ☐ The game is launched from its store, without ReShade or Special_K.
- ☐ Only the BattlEye folder is excluded in the antivirus, which stays active.
- ☐ GTA Online connects and a full session plays without being kicked.
