GTA Online profile data not loaded from the Rockstar cloud on PC: solutions

English translation of the original French post. Code, commands, paths and error codes keep their original meaning. Replies and moderation are shared in the original discussion.

When you launch GTA Online on PC, the game shows an alert saying your profile data could not be loaded from Rockstar's cloud servers, then sends you back to the main menu. This guide follows Rockstar Games' support article about this alert (updated February 17, 2026, checked on October 27, 2026). It covers GTA Online on PC; Rockstar's article does not distinguish between GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy.

Problem

  • When joining GTA Online on PC, this message appears (English text published by Rockstar):
Plain text3 lines

Alert: Your profile data could not be loaded from the Rockstar cloud servers at this time. Please try again later. Returning to the Main Menu. For further information, please visit www.rockstargames.com/support.
  • The game returns to the main menu and your GTA Online character doesn't load.
  • Story Mode may still be available.

What this message means

According to Rockstar, the alert occurs when there is an issue retrieving your latest GTA Online character profile data, and it should resolve on its own. It can also appear if your network or internet service provider uses a proxy server or a VPN to connect to Rockstar Games services.

So the message is not, in itself, a sign that your character has been deleted.

Before you start

Step 1: check service status and try again later

When to use it: always first, since Rockstar says the error normally resolves on its own.

Suggested solution

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Service Status page.
  2. Look at Grand Theft Auto Online > PC and at the Authentication and Rockstar Games Launcher services.
  3. If a service is shown as degraded or under maintenance, wait for it to recover before changing anything on your PC.
  4. Otherwise, fully close the game, wait a few minutes, then relaunch GTA Online.

Expected result: the character loads normally once the service is back.

When to move on: all services are shown as operational and the alert comes back.

Step 2: connect without a VPN or proxy

When to use it: you use a VPN, a proxy, or a network whose configuration you don't control (company, school, residence).

Suggested solution

  1. Disconnect the VPN or proxy configured on the PC, then relaunch the game.
  2. On a network you don't manage, try another connection if possible (for example your phone's hotspot) to compare.

Expected result: if the character loads without the VPN or on another connection, the cause lies in that network path.

Rollback: you can turn your VPN back on after playing; Rockstar simply identifies it as a possible cause of the alert.

Step 3: delete the local profile in the Rockstar Games Launcher

When to use it: the alert persists while services are operational and you use neither a VPN nor a proxy.

Suggested solution

Procedure described by Rockstar:

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under My installed games, select Grand Theft Auto V.
  4. Make sure Enable cloud saves is checked.
  5. Under Launcher settings, select Account information.
  6. Next to Delete local profile, select Delete.
  7. Select Confirm.
  8. Once the profile is deleted, sign back in to the Rockstar Games Launcher, then launch Grand Theft Auto V.

What this does: according to Rockstar, it removes all profile details stored on your PC and requires you to sign in again. It does not delete your Rockstar Games account or any saved games. Signing back in recreates the local profile.

Precaution: keep your Rockstar Games account email and password at hand, as well as your authenticator app if 2-Step Verification is enabled.

Expected result: after signing back in, GTA Online loads your character.

Step 4: verify the game files

When to use it: the alert still comes back after deleting the local profile.

Suggested solution

Use the verification offered by your launcher:

Expected result: the launcher replaces missing or damaged files, then GTA Online loads.

Step 5: check the Rockstar Games Launcher connection

When to use it: other online features also fail (launcher sign-in, sessions), not just profile loading.

Suggested solution

  1. Follow Rockstar's article Rockstar Games Launcher Connection Troubleshooting (updated February 17, 2026): speed test, wired connection if you're on Wi-Fi, ports used by the launcher, and router restart.
  2. For connection messages specific to GTA Online, also see Services en ligne Rockstar Games indisponibles sur GTA Online PC : solutions.

Expected result: you know whether the problem comes from your network or from an incident on Rockstar's side.

Special cases

  • Message seen by many players at the same time: this is probably a service incident. Watch the status page rather than changing your PC.
  • BattlEye-related message: that's a different problem, see Erreur BattlEye au lancement de GTA Online sur PC : causes et solutions.
  • The problem persists after all these steps: contact Rockstar Games Support from the page of the article listed in the sources (help link at the bottom of the page).

Final check

  • ☐ The status page shows GTA Online PC as operational.
  • ☐ The game was tested without a VPN or proxy.
  • ☐ The local profile was deleted, then recreated by signing back in to the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  • ☐ The game files were verified with the right launcher.
  • ☐ Your GTA Online character loads without returning to the main menu.
