Your Steam copy of GTA V is linked to a Rockstar Games account that isn't the right one (old account, a relative's account, an account created by mistake), and you want to attach it to your usual account. Unlike most linked accounts, a Steam account cannot be unlinked from the Rockstar account settings: unlinking goes through Rockstar Games Support and has significant consequences. This guide follows Rockstar Games' support articles checked on October 27, 2026 (listed at the end of the topic).
Problem
- GTA V on Steam automatically signs in to a Rockstar Games account that isn't yours or isn't the one you normally use.
- Your GTA Online character doesn't appear because it is on another Rockstar Games account.
- The Steam account doesn't show as unlinkable in your Rockstar Games account connections.
What to know before acting
According to Rockstar Games:
- Most platform accounts can be unlinked directly from the Rockstar Games account Connections page.
- Steam, Epic Games and Xbox app for PC accounts must be unlinked by the Rockstar Games Support team.
- Eligibility depends on the status of the Rockstar Games account: an account under a cooldown after a previous link change must wait for it to end, and an account with an active suspension or ban is not eligible.
- A one-time exception may be granted if the wrong PC platform account was linked and the Rockstar Games account has no gameplay time or progress in Rockstar titles.
- After unlinking, you are no longer able to play Rockstar titles with that Steam account and it leads to loss of online progress.
Don't request unlinking before checking where your progress is: its consequences are serious.
Step 1: check which Rockstar Games account is linked
When to use it: always first, to avoid an unnecessary unlink.
Suggested solution
- Launch GTA V from Steam and note which Rockstar Games account signs in to the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in to that account on rockstargames.com and open Connections: check that it shows your Steam account.
- Then sign in to your "usual" Rockstar Games account and open its Connections too.
- Note which account holds your progress (GTA Online character, purchases).
What to look for: if your progress is already on the account linked to Steam, there is nothing to unlink; just use that account.
Expected result: you know exactly which Rockstar Games account is linked to your Steam account and where your progress is.
Step 2: send the unlink request to Rockstar Support
When to use it: after step 1, if unlinking is really needed.
Suggested solution
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games support site with the Rockstar Games account to be unlinked (the one currently linked to Steam).
- Open the Rockstar Support form for linking and unlinking accounts.
- Describe the situation and provide the information the form asks for.
- Rockstar asks for written confirmation that you accept the consequences of unlinking (loss of online progress and inability to play Rockstar titles with that Steam account). Read Rockstar's Steam unlinking article before writing this confirmation.
- If the wrong account was linked with no gameplay time, say so: this is the one-time exception provided for in Rockstar's policy.
Expected result: Rockstar Support reviews the request and tells you whether the account is eligible.
When to stop: if Support says a cooldown applies, wait until it ends; Rockstar states that Support cannot bypass this cooldown.
