Rockstar Games account email address changed or lost: recover the account

English translation of the original French post. Code, commands, paths and error codes keep their original meaning. Replies and moderation are shared in the original discussion.

You can no longer sign in to your Rockstar Games account, used for GTA V and GTA Online, because its email address was changed without your consent, or because you no longer have access to the linked mailbox. This guide follows Rockstar Games' support article on changes to the account email address (checked on October 27, 2026). Work in order: the first method is the fastest when it is available.

Problem

  • Your usual email address is no longer accepted at Rockstar Games sign-in.
  • You received an email from Rockstar Games saying the account address was changed, and you didn't make that change.
  • You no longer have access to the mailbox linked to the account (abandoned address, hacked mailbox, closed school or work address).

Before you start

  • Identify which of these situations applies: the account's address was changed, or the mailbox itself is inaccessible.
  • Never pay a website or person offering to "recover" an account: only use the procedures of Rockstar Games and your email provider.
SituationMethod
The account address was changed, you still have access to the old mailboxStep 1: recovery link
The linked mailbox is hacked or inaccessibleStep 2: email provider
Neither method worksStep 3: request to Rockstar Support

Step 1: use the recovery link sent to the old address

When to use it: the account address was changed and you still have access to the previous address.

Suggested solution

According to Rockstar, whenever the linked email address is changed, an email containing an account-specific recovery link is sent to the previous address. Clicking that link rolls back the change.

  1. Open the mailbox of the old address.
  2. Look in the inbox, any routing folders and the spam folder for an email from noreply@rockstargames.com with the subject Rockstar Games Email Changed.
  3. Click the recovery link it contains.

Precaution: check the sender before clicking. If you're unsure about an email imitating Rockstar, see E-mail d'hameçonnage (phishing) ouvert ou cliqué : que faire (French guide).

Expected result: the account is linked to your old address again, and you can sign back in.

Next: change the Rockstar Games account password and review its security (see "After recovery").

Step 2: first recover the mailbox with its provider

When to use it: you no longer have access to the mailbox linked to the Rockstar Games account, or it was hacked.

Suggested solution

Rockstar says you should then contact your email provider's support team to recover the mailbox. Rockstar's example: for a compromised Gmail address, reach out to Google Support.

Expected result: you have recovered the mailbox; then go back to step 1 if the account address was also changed, or simply reset the Rockstar Games password.

Step 3: ask Rockstar Support to restore a previous address

When to use it: steps 1 and 2 were not enough.

Suggested solution

In some cases, Rockstar can revert the account to an email address that was previously linked to it, if you submit the request from that previously linked address.

  1. Open Rockstar Support's Lost access to my email account form.
  2. Submit the request using the email address that was linked to the account before the change.

Limit stated by Rockstar: if no other address was ever linked to the account, or if the request comes from an address that was never linked to the account, Rockstar cannot change the account details, for security reasons.

Expected result: Rockstar Support handles the request and tells you what happens next.

After recovery: choose a reliable address

Rockstar recommends that the email address linked to the account:

  • is one you use regularly;
  • is not an .edu, work or school-affiliated address;
  • is secured with 2-Step Verification;
  • is registered with a well-known provider.

Without these precautions, Rockstar warns that Support may have trouble recovering your account if you lose access to that address again.

If a 2-Step Verification code is later rejected at Rockstar Games sign-in, see the forum's GTA Online > Connexion & multijoueur section (French section).

Final check

  • ☐ You have access to the mailbox linked to the Rockstar Games account.
  • ☐ The account is linked to an address you control.
  • ☐ The Rockstar Games account password and the mailbox password have been changed.
  • ☐ 2-Step Verification is enabled on the mailbox.
