Your operator has reached max level in DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, but Prestige still won't go through? There are two possible causes. Either one of the requirements set by the game is not met, or you are affected by a known issue, which Activision lists with a workaround on its MW4 known issues page. This guide helps you check the official requirements, then apply that workaround.
What to know before you start
- Issue acknowledged by Activision: on the "Known Issues in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4" page (updated 10/30/2026), Activision states that an issue prevents some players from Prestiging an active Operator after meeting requirements. The issue is under investigation.
- The published workaround: according to Activision, affected players have found success by equipping Rare weapons with only three attachment slots, meaning weapons that have never had four or more attachments. Activision does not mention a permanent fix yet.
- Prestige consumes gear: according to the official Call of Duty blog, the required gear is removed, the DMZ Cash is deducted and the operator's Traits are reset. In return, the operator receives a random permanent Prestige Trait. Remove from the Loadout and Backpack anything you want to keep: these items are lost when you Prestige.
- Another known issue: the same page also lists an issue under investigation where items are removed from the player's Stash but the Operator does not receive a Prestige Trait. Activision has not published a workaround for this case. If it happens to you, do not attempt another Prestige and report it (step 3).
- No rollback: a confirmed Prestige cannot be undone. Check everything before confirming.
- Labels: in-game menu names may differ slightly from those in the official blog quoted here.
Step 1: check the first Prestige requirements
When to use it: always, first.
Expected result: all official requirements are met.
When to stop: if anything is missing, Prestige cannot go through: this is not the known issue. Complete the gear or cash first.
Step 2: apply Activision's workaround
When to use it: all step 1 requirements are met, but Prestige still won't go through.
Expected result: Prestige goes through, the required gear and DMZ Cash are consumed, Traits are reset and a permanent Prestige Trait is granted to the operator.
Rollback: as long as you have not confirmed Prestige, you can re-equip your usual weapons. Once confirmed, nothing can be undone.
When to stop: if Prestige is still impossible with weapons that never had more than three attachments, do not try other combinations at random: you might consume gear. Report the issue to Activision instead (step 3).
Step 3: report the issue to Activision
When to use it: the workaround did not work, or your situation differs from the one Activision describes.
Expected result: your report is sent to Activision.
When to stop: never share your account credentials with anyone other than official Activision support.
Special cases
| Situation | What to know |
|---|---|
| Second Prestige | The official blog requires two weapons with four attachment slots, an Epic Plate Carrier and Backpack, four Epic ingredients and 300,000 DMZ Cash. Activision does not say whether its workaround (Rare three-slot weapons) also applies to this case. |
| Third Prestige and beyond | Two four-slot weapons, a Legendary Plate Carrier and Backpack, four Legendary ingredients and 500,000 DMZ Cash. |
| Items removed but no Prestige Trait received | A separate known issue, under investigation by Activision, with no published workaround. Report it with the form (step 3). |
| Operator MIA | Recover them first at the Operators station with DMZ Cash. The cost increases with the number of Traits. |
| Beyond three Prestige Traits | The blog states that from the fourth Prestige onwards, you choose between keeping your three permanent Traits or replacing one with the new one. |
| DMZ Prestige vs multiplayer Prestige | These are two separate systems. DMZ Operator Prestige is tied to a single operator. |
| Problem launching the game from COD Home (Xbox on PC) | Another known issue, covered in the guide No button to launch Modern Warfare 4 in COD Home on PC (Xbox): solutions. |
Final check
- ☐ The operator has earned 18 Trait Points and is not MIA.
- ☐ The required gear is equipped, with the right rarity.
- ☐ Both weapons are Rare, have three slots, and never had four or more attachments.
- ☐ The DMZ Bank covers the required amount.
- ☐ Items you want to keep have been removed from the Loadout and Backpack.
