Migrating your GTA Online profile from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series: steps and limits

Tutorial

You're moving from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, and you want your GTA Online character on the new console. Rockstar Games provides an in-game profile migration, with several limits to know before confirming: compatible platforms, purchased GTA$, character choice. This guide follows Rockstar Games' support articles checked on October 27, 2026 (listed at the end of the topic).

Problem

  • On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, GTA Online asks you to create a new character although you had one on PS4 or Xbox One.
  • You don't know what data carries over to the new console (progress, GTA$, benefits).
  • The migration option doesn't appear or your profile is shown as ineligible.

What to know before acting

According to Rockstar Games:

  • Migration is done from GTA Online on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, once you're signed in to your Rockstar Games account on the console.
  • The migrated profile remains available on PS4 or Xbox One, but progress is no longer synced between the old and the new console afterwards.
  • No migration is possible between PS4/Xbox One and PC, between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or from a console to PC.
  • Purchased, unspent GTA$ do not transfer when you switch console families (PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox One to PS5).
  • Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefits are only accessible through a migrated character that already had them.
  • A profile may be ineligible: suspended or banned profile, profile deemed illegitimate, or insufficient progress.

Read the Review Character screen carefully before confirming: choosing a new character overwrites the character in that slot.

Step 1: make sure you're using the right Rockstar Games account

When to use it: always first.

Suggested solution

  1. On the old console (PS4 or Xbox One), check which Rockstar Games account is linked to your PlayStation Network or Xbox account: that account holds your GTA Online profile.
  2. On the new console, launch GTA V then GTA Online and sign in with that same Rockstar Games account when prompted.

What to look for: if you sign in with another Rockstar Games account, the profile to migrate won't be found.

Expected result: the new console is signed in to the Rockstar Games account that holds your profile.

Step 2: start the migration from GTA Online

When to use it: you're signed in to the right Rockstar Games account on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Suggested solution

  1. Open GTA Online. Rockstar lists two ways in:
  • from the game's Landing Page, Online tab, then the Migrate Profile screen;
  • from the Pause Menu, Online tab, then Migrate Profile.
  1. Select the PS4 or Xbox One profile to migrate and follow the on-screen instructions.

Expected result: the game shows the Review Character screen.

Step 3: confirm the character without overwriting your progress

When to use it: the Review Character screen is displayed.

Suggested solution

  1. Check the character offered (appearance, rank, slot).
  2. If you choose to create a new character, be aware that it overwrites the character in the chosen slot.
  3. If no character has been created yet, the game may take you to the GTA Online Career Builder.
  4. Confirm once you're sure of your choice.

Expected result: your migrated character is available on the new console.

Special cases

  • PC (Legacy to Enhanced): migration on PC works differently. See GTA Online character missing from GTA V Enhanced on PC: migrate your profile.
  • Switching console families: moving from PS4 to Xbox Series X|S (or Xbox One to PS5) is possible, but without purchased, unspent GTA$.
  • Profile ineligible after a penalty: see Rockstar's suspension and ban rules, listed in the sources.
  • Story Mode: this guide only covers the GTA Online profile, not the Story Mode save.

Final check

  • ☐ The new console is signed in to the Rockstar Games account that holds your profile.
  • ☐ You know whether your purchased, unspent GTA$ will transfer (same console family) or not.
  • ☐ You checked the Review Character screen before confirming.
  • ☐ The migrated character appears in GTA Online on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
