"Failed to initialize audio hardware" error in GTA V Enhanced: solutions

English translation of the original French post. Code, commands, paths and error codes keep their original meaning. Replies and moderation are shared in the original discussion.

When launching GTA V Enhanced on PC, a message says the audio hardware could not be initialized and the game does not start properly. Rockstar links this error to the sound device, its drivers and the Windows audio configuration. This guide follows the Rockstar Support article on this message (updated on 8 April 2025) and Microsoft's sound help page, checked on 27 October 2026.

Problem

When launching GTA V Enhanced, this message appears (as published by Rockstar):

Plain text3 lines

Failed to initialize audio hardware. Please ensure that your audio device is functioning correctly.

What Rockstar asks you to check

What to checkWhat to look atStep
System requirementsThe PC meets the GTA V Enhanced requirements, including a supported sound deviceStep 1
Audio outputA valid playback device is selected in WindowsStep 2
Audio driversThe sound device is supported by its drivers, and those drivers are up to dateStep 3
Speaker configurationIt matches the speakers actually connectedStep 4

Prerequisites

  • A Windows account with administrator rights to update a driver.
  • The name of the audio device in use (motherboard, USB headset, HDMI monitor, dedicated sound card).

Step 1: check the system requirements

When to use it: first, especially on an older PC or if you are unsure between the two PC versions of the game.

Suggested solution

  1. Compare your PC with the GTA V Enhanced system requirements, in particular the presence of a supported sound device.
  2. If your hardware is older, the two versions are compared in GTA V Enhanced or Legacy on PC: choosing the version for your hardware.

Expected result: you know whether your PC matches the GTA V Enhanced requirements.

Step 2: check the Windows audio output

When to use it: you use a headset, an HDMI monitor or several audio devices.

Suggested solution

  1. On the taskbar, select the Speakers icon, then the arrow to the right of the volume slider to open the list of audio outputs.
  2. Choose the device you want to hear the game on.
  3. Microsoft points out that a monitor without speakers set as the default device will produce no sound: check that the default output is a device that actually plays sound.
  4. If the device is external (USB, HDMI), check that it is connected and switched on before launching the game.

Expected result: Windows sound plays on the chosen device; then relaunch GTA V Enhanced.

Step 3: update or reinstall the audio driver

When to use it: the output is correct, but the error persists.

Suggested solution

Step 3.1: open Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio device, then Update driver and Search automatically for drivers.

Step 3.2: if Windows finds nothing, download the audio driver from the website of the motherboard, PC or sound card manufacturer.

Step 3.3: if the problem continues, Microsoft suggests uninstalling the audio device (right-click > Uninstall device, ticking the option that attempts to remove the driver), then restarting the PC so Windows reinstalls it.

Expected result: the device works with an up-to-date driver and the game starts without the message.

Rollback: if sound gets worse after an update, open the device properties in Device Manager, Driver tab, then Roll Back Driver.

💡 PC CONFORT RECOMMENDATION

To spot a missing or outdated audio driver, you can use the PC Confort tool Driver Detect.

Step 4: match the speaker configuration

When to use it: you have changed the number of channels (5.1, 7.1) in Windows or in your sound card software.

Suggested solution

  1. Check that the chosen configuration matches your physical speakers. Rockstar gives this example: with stereo speakers, do not set Windows to 5.1.
  2. Adjust the configuration in the playback device properties (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound, Playback tab) or in your sound card software.
  3. On the same screen, Microsoft also suggests trying another Default Format: select the device, then Properties, Advanced tab.
  4. In Settings > Sound, Microsoft also suggests turning off the device's Audio enhancements (in its advanced settings) if sound is a problem.

Expected result: the audio configuration matches the connected hardware and GTA V Enhanced initializes sound.

Rollback: write down each setting before changing it so you can restore it if it has no effect.

Special cases

  • No sound at all in Windows: the problem goes beyond the game; first follow all the steps of the Microsoft page listed in the sources.
  • Headset plugged in after launch: close the game, plug in the headset, select it as output, then relaunch.

Final check

  • ☐ Windows sound works on the chosen device.
  • ☐ The audio driver is up to date (or rolled back if it caused problems).
  • ☐ The speaker configuration matches the connected hardware.
  • ☐ GTA V Enhanced starts without the "Failed to initialize audio hardware" message.
