You pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI digitally and want to cancel before the November 19, 2026 release, but you don't know how long you have or how to get your money back. The rules differ between PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. This guide summarizes Sony's and Microsoft's official help pages, checked on October 27, 2026 and listed at the end of the topic. The terms shown when you make your request are the ones that apply.
Problem
- You want to cancel a digital GTA VI pre-order on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- The cancel option doesn't appear or the refund request is turned down.
- You were charged before release and don't know whether that's normal.
- Your pre-order disappeared even though you didn't cancel it.
Before you start
- Note the store you used: PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store or a retailer.
- Note the format: digital pre-order or physical version (code in the box). This guide only covers digital pre-orders from PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the account that placed the order (PlayStation Network account or Microsoft account).

Step 1: identify the store and the payment date
When to use it: always, before any request.
Suggested solution
- Open the order confirmation email.
- Find the store, the exact product name (Grand Theft Auto VI or Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition) and the payment date.
- On PlayStation, compare the payment date with the release date (November 19, 2026): more or less than 14 days before?
What to look for: if you ordered from the Rockstar Games Store, cancellation goes through its partner Xsolla (see Special cases). For a boxed copy bought from a retailer, the retailer's terms apply.
Expected result: you know which step to follow.
Step 2: cancel a PlayStation Store pre-order
When to use it: the pre-order was placed on PlayStation Store (PS5).
Suggested solution
- Check the conditions in the PlayStation Store cancellation policy:
- paid more than 14 days before release: you can cancel any time up to release;
- paid 14 days or less before release: you can cancel up to 14 days after payment;
- in both cases, the main content must not have been downloaded, streamed or pre-loaded.
- Follow How to cancel a digital content pre-order from PlayStation Store: request it through PlayStation's contact form or the PlayStation Store refund request page (order details, then Cancel Purchase).
- While you wait, stop the game from downloading on its own: Game Library, select the pre-ordered game, then the timer. In the content list, a selected checkbox means auto-download is on. Clear it to turn auto-download off, then select OK (procedure on the pre-order and auto-download page).
What to look for: the PlayStation Store lists GTA VI with a 7-Day Pre-load. Once the pre-load has started, Sony says a refund is no longer possible unless the content is faulty.
Expected result: Sony states a refund within 10 days, to the original payment method where possible. For some payment methods (money vouchers, mobile operator billing, Paysafecard, Sofort, Ideal, Bancontact, etc.), the refund goes to the account wallet.
Rollback: to get the game after cancelling, you need to pre-order or buy it again, with whatever offers apply at that time. Sony states that pre-order bonus content stops working after cancellation.
Step 3: cancel a Microsoft Store pre-order (Xbox)
When to use it: the pre-order was placed on Microsoft Store, from an Xbox Series X|S or the website.
Suggested solution
- Open your Microsoft order history and sign in with the console's Microsoft account.
- Find the GTA VI pre-order and select Cancel item, as described in Cancel an order or pre-order from Microsoft Store.
- If Cancel item doesn't appear for an Xbox purchase, Microsoft points to the Xbox refund form.
What to look for: according to Pre-orders for Microsoft Store, paying with your Microsoft account balance charges you immediately. With another payment method, the charge can happen up to 10 days before release.
Expected result: the pre-order shows as cancelled. If you had already been charged, cancelling before release is processed as a refund.
Step 4: understand an unexpected charge or cancellation
When to use it: you see a charge before release, or your Xbox pre-order disappeared.
Suggested solution
- Charge before release on Xbox: this is expected (account balance charged immediately; other payment methods charged up to 10 days before release).
- Xbox pre-order cancelled without you doing anything: Microsoft automatically cancels a pre-order if payment can't be authorized at release, for example with an expired card. Update your payment method in your Microsoft account, then place the pre-order again if you want.
- On PlayStation: check the account's transaction history to confirm the payment matches the GTA VI pre-order and the edition you chose.
Expected result: the charge or cancellation is explained with nothing more to do, or you know which payment method to fix.
Special cases
- Pre-order from the Rockstar Games Store: the Rockstar Store FAQ points to the Xsolla cancellation form, with the order number and the email address used. Editions and bonuses are covered in GTA VI boxed copy with no disc: code, editions and pre-order bonuses explained.
- Pre-load already started on PS5: Sony's policy excludes refunds once the download or pre-load has started, unless the content is faulty.
- Free month of GTA+: according to the game's PlayStation Store page, the offer applies to digital pre-orders placed before November 20, 2026. If you cancel, don't count on this bonus.
- Other countries: the pages cited are the UK/US versions (the French guide uses the French ones). Terms may differ depending on your account's region.

Final check
- ☐ The store, edition and payment date are identified.
- ☐ On PS5, the game was neither downloaded nor pre-loaded before the request.
- ☐ The cancellation shows in order history or a confirmation email arrived.
- ☐ The refund is visible on the payment method or in the account wallet.
